Eleven Hampers For Our Community

Today there was a Rock Paper Scissors Championship in the JT gym between students from John Taylor, Hedges and Buchanan. The food items collected generated 11 hampers for families in our community. John Taylor students bought in non-perishable food items to their period 3 class where each food item entitled them to one "life" to play in a game of rock, paper scissors. The following students represented John Taylor Collegiate: Linda H., Landon B., Emily M., Jenna S., Emmett P., Travis B., Moe N., Riley P., Faith K., Ghasem F., Tyler D., and Britanny L. It was a great way to work together with our family of schools to collect items for our hampers and have some fun. Thanks to the John Taylor leadership students and Mr. Vermette for organizing this event. We look forward to running this event again in December of 2014.

Math30S Application to the Real World

Students in Mr. Goetz's Math 30SA class presented their projects investigating real life applications of their understanding the concepts of T-charts, Z- scores, Mean, Median, Mode, Standard Deviation and  Bell Curve.  Topics investigated included;  Who's your Friend on Facebook,  NHL Goal for the Year, Number of Children in a Family, Number of Hours a Grade 11 Student plays Video Games, The Soccer Cleats, The Average Height of a Teen, NHL Goals Against Per Game and Hours of TV Watching.  Students were able to share their findings and it provided an effective way of assessing students' understanding of these concepts.

JT hosts the Annual Hamilton House Holiday Dinner

Student volunteers from the Foods and Nutrition classes prepared and served a delicious turkey dinner to the residents from Hamilton House.  The menu included turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, steamed carrots, coleslaw, punch, tea, coffee and the ever popular dainty tray.  Piano music set the mood for a relaxing and enjoyable evening together.  Thanks to Mr. Rondeau for the donation of the three turkeys.  A special thanks to Mr. Lockhart, Mrs. James,

JT Students Participate in the Christmas Sock Campaign

 Students from John Taylor went to Siloam Mission on a - 40 day.

JJ is the Community Education and Under the Radar Coordinator at Siloam Mission.  He  shared that, "You need to understand the issue, so that you don't judge it."  There are many kinds of poverty. There is a "needs" poverty where drilling a well is the solution to the need for clean water.  The distribution of a resource solved that issue.  Siloam mission deals with "broken heart" poverty where the solution  requires more than the distribution of resources. Many people at the Mission have shared that their life experiences "leaves them in a place were people feel worthless."  JJ wants to help people have an oppotunity to experience success to turn around this feeling. This positive social interaction of time and friendship can transform people. This sense of community helps heal everyone involved.  Get involved.  You can make a difference.  Siloam offers three meals a day to appoximately 500 people, each meal.  With the very cold weather, Siloam was working at max capacity but it is so well organized it still maintained the community spirit with a welcoming atmosphere. John Taylor staff volunteered their time on Monday evening to serve food and sort clothing donations.  The students contributed to the Christmas Socks campaign.  The donations of time and socks were greatfully received.  For more information on Siloam Mission please go to info@siloam.ca. 

University of Winnipeg Elders in Residence Program

Greetings to Hector from the University of Winnipeg Elders in Residence Program.  He was invited to speak with the students from Mr. Kolton's class.  He shared that he is from the Wolf clan and explained how he uses the talking stick, sharing circle, sweat lodge to connect with others.  He has been a sun-dancer for the past 13 years which allows him the time to connect with the elements.  He reminded the students that well-being is an accomplishment and our main goals should always be wisdom and balance as long as the sun shines, rivers flow and grass grows.....

Kyle Nobless - Tells his Story

He was 20 years old when he was cast for his first acting role.  Recently, he was in Montreal for a role in a show called Mohawk Girlz where he plays a police officer.  It was a dream come true on so many levels.   He shared that he was honoured to be asked to co-host the Aboriginal Peoples Awards.  Currently he is writing and producing a script based on his family.  He shared that growing up he struggled with drugs & alcohol, bullying and felt like an outsider.  Eventually found his freedom and creativity in acting. He had students act out a scene and reminded them how important it is to remember to breathe.  Now he celebrates everyday that he is living his dream and wants to encourage others.

JT Winter Concert - Music Warms the Evening

The JT Winter concert provided a warm and inviting evening of music entertainment.  There were performances from Band, Choral and Drum Line.  The dedication of the students, teachers and our music student teacher candidate was evident in the quality of the music experience.

JT Foods Special Lunch

The students in the Foods classes at JT  are taking their skills to a larger audience.  The SJSD maintenance staff have been invited to attend a special lunch on Tuesday December 3rd.  The main course will be provided by the grade 11 students, dessert will be provided by the grade 12 students and the grade 10 students will be the servers for this event. Thank you to their teachers

Making Music in Woods Class

Logan is a grade 12 student in the JT WOODS program.  He has spent his last two months working on making his very own guitar.  How that he has the guitar his next step is to learn how to play it.

MTYP Dying to Be Thin

MTYP - Dying to Be Thin

MTYP will be at John Taylor today to present the play...."Dying to Be Thin" to all of the Grade 9 & 10 Students.
The main character is Amanda who could be any one in your class. She is a regular teenager, and she hangs around with a good group of friends. Recently, Amanda’s grades have started to slip. She’s also started to miss school a lot. What’s going on with Amanda only happens behind a closed, locked door, so it may be hard to figure out. This extraordinary play manages to be funny as well as profoundly powerful and moving.

JT Students Volunteer at the Crestview Church Advent Dinner

The Student Council at John Taylor is busy during this holiday season. On Saturday there were 17 students who volunteered at the Crestview United Church to assist with the serving of the community advent dinner.  Thank you for all that you do to assist in our community.

JT Choral Students performed with the WSO

Congratulations to John Taylor members of the SJSD Divisional Senior Choir, Nate H. Galen M. and Larissa J. , for their performance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on Saturday evening at the Concert Hall. It was an amazing performance.

Movember

MOVEMBER at John Taylor Collegiate
It is a simple as grow moustaches for November. This creates awareness of Movember in a fun way that also generates conversations about men’s health issues. Jersey Day

Friday, November 29 is a national day to show your love and support for sport by wearing a jersey, team or club uniform to school, work or play. From municipal council chambers to office buildings and classrooms across the nation, we envision a sea of Canadians wearing their hearts on their sleeves on national Jersey Day. John Taylor showed our support for SPORT today.

Criteria:
No other sources of energy: elastics, CO2 cartridges, nuclear, combustion, circuits, etc
Mousetrap car must have at least three wheels.

Kyle Nobess - Winnipeg Actor Coming to JT - December 5th @ 12:15

Kyle Nobess is a Winnipeg born actor who has starred in the TV series "Cashing In" and "Mohawk Girls".  He has also been in the movie "Imperfect Justice" and co-hosted the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards.  He will be coming to John Taylor Collegiate on Thursday December 5th at 12:15 to share his story.  Hope to see you there.

Scott Cairns Shares His Story with JT Students

Our first Alumni presenter from the class of 1989 is Scott Cairns who returns to John Taylor Collegiate as a Nobel Peace Prize winner for his work with the United Nations, OPCW - the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.  Their mission was to find deadly chemical weapons where ever they might be used in warfare or on citizens and destroy them.  Students were captivated by his story.

JT Presentation "Seeds of Learning" - Report on Education

Students and staff from John Taylor Collegiate presented on the Seeds of Learning Project.  This two year inclusive project included all of the JT feeder Schools.  It involved preparing the gardens, planting the seeds and selling the plants.  First students were taught about the benefits of composting.  Then John Taylor students provided leadership as mentors when the students got together to paint birdhouses, play games and celebrate together. This was a wonderful opportunity to promote student leadership and exploration of eco-globe initiatives.  

Student council makes a difference at JT

JT will be collecting donations for the Me to We BRICK by BRICK fundraiser.  The money goes to support building a school.

Nobel Peace Prize Alumnus Presentation on November 27

to Meet With John Taylor Collegiate Students

Scott Cairns is part of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW),
which was awarded the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize "for its extensive efforts to eliminate
chemical weapons." On Wednesday, November 27th at 2:25, Cairns, who graduated from
John Taylor, will meet with a group of 200 students to talk about his
experiences in Syria and answer questions relating to his work with the OPCW.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was founded in 1997 to enforce
the Chemical Weapons Convention, the first international treaty to outlaw an entire class
of weapons. By awarding the prize to the OPCW, the Nobel committee focused attention
on the conflict raging in Syria without siding with any of the groups involved. The OPCW
is overseeing the destruction of Syria's chemical-weapons stockpiles and has inspectors
working in the war-torn country, where Scott Cairns leads the team.

Physics 30 - Guys VS Girls Tug-o-War

In class there was a question that required a vector diagram of a Tug-O-War.  The boys thought they would win and the girls thought they would win.  The challenge was on and they got the Tug-O-War rope from the gym and had to play out this situation to a natural consequence....Pizza was the Prize.  There were  8 guys VS. 13 girls who participated in the challenge. The winners were the GIRLS....  The Pizza was never such a good motivation!!!

Teens Against Drinking and Driving -TADD

Did you know that in 2012, 53% of impaired drivers were between the ages of 16-24?

That nearly half of Grade 11 and 12 students have been a passenger with a driver who had consumed alcohol within an hour of driving?

These facts are harsh realities here in Manitoba that we, as young drivers, can make positive choices to reduce our odds of being a statistic.   Teens Against Drinking and Driving (TADD), with the support of the Manitoba School Boards Association and Manitoba Public Insurance, is very pleased to bring Friends For Life to John Taylor Collegiate on Thursday November 21st at 9:30.  The Friends For Life program is about having real people share their real experiences with young drivers, with students pledging not to drink and drive, or be a passenger in a vehicle operated by an impaired driver.  

Blood Donor Clinic

The Canadian Blood Services had set a goal of 51 donors but we rocked it with 67! Thank you to all the staff, students and community members who came to help us reach our goal.

WWAC Junior Varsity Boys Volleyball Champions 2013-14

Congratulations to the Junior Varisity Boys volleyball team for their victory over St. Pauls in the conference  finals.  The pipers came back from a two game deficit to win 15 to 11 in the 5th game at the stroke of midnight.  A huge thanks to all of the staff, students, alumni and parents who came out to display their PIPER  PRIDE and support our players.  Good luck as the boys prepare for the Provincial finals November 21 - 23.

Friday Nov 15 -Blood Donor Clinic

JT is hosting a blood donor clinic in support of Canadian Blood Services on Friday November 15th from 10:30 to 2:30 in gym C.

Thursday Talking Circle

There will be a weekly Talking Circle in room 313 on Thursdays from 12:15 - 1:00 with Kathy Licandro. It is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about Aboriginal Culture.

Bus Cancellation Information

School Bus Cancellation 

Parents should listen to the radio (CJOB) for information regarding cancellation of bus transportation during extreme weather conditions. We believe it is in the best interest of all students' safety that all parents/guardians be contacted through the automated phone service, even if their child does not take the school bus.

The Chief Superintendent will consider the following criteria when considering School Bus Cancellation: 

Extremely Cold Weather 
- A wind chill of -45 or greater will dictate cancellation of school buses within the division.

Hazardous Weather/Road Conditions
- Blizzard Warnings 
- Ice-covered roads and/or snow-blocked roads 
- Any other weather condition that may put students at risk.

Student council makes plans for upcoming events.

Students will be volunteering at the Friday November 15th Blood Donor Clinic in Gym C from 10:30 to 2:30.

November 18th to November 22nd will be Bullying Awareness Week.  There will be daily activities planned  for our school community. Watch out for more information about the movie presentation of "Bully" in the JT theatre over the lunch hour on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Wednesday will be WEAR BLUE Day to bring attention to diversity and acceptance of all.  Thursday will be "Hi-5 Day"  and the week will conclude with Gave-A-Compliment Day on Friday.

Saturday November 30 the Student Council students are volunteering as servers at the Crestview United Church Fall Supper.

Lastly, all classes will be collecting money for the Me to We Brick to Brick initiative.

This will be a very busy time for everyone.
